Salvation in the Wilderness

John the Baptist began his ministry in the wilderness.  This sermon asks why John began there.  Why not the City?  It also looks at the positive and negative qualities of wilderness and how they work within our lives for both good and ill.

Let's Start At the Beginning

This sermon examines the open of the Gospel of John, especially the way that John skips the nativity narratives in Matthew and Luke and begins from the time before Creation when Jesus and the Father were planning what we now call the Earth and humanity.

Simeon recognized the child.

This sermon looks at Simeon, the old man who used to shuffle around in the Temple looking for Messiah, and who finally got to witness the newly born Jesus.  The text comes from Luke 2:22-38.

This sermon is a a look at the Magnificat, Mary's beautiful song about the good news that God sent us in the form of Jesus, his son.

John the Baptist had second thoughts about Jesus.  "Are you really the Messiah?"  This sermon takes a look at common misunderstandings about Jesus' role and identity.

What is the Gospel?

John the Baptist began his ministry announcing the "the beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, son of God."  This sermon explores what gospel means and whether the church's message in the past has actually been good news (or gospel).

Hosea - Gospel Personified

This sermon looks at the story of Hosea and Gomer (his wife) and examines the way Hosea's enacted parable resembles the way that Jesus love us and rescued us from the effects of our sin.  Though Gomer was a prostitute, Hosea did not relent in loving her.  In the same way, God has not given up on humanity in general in spite of great failure and unfaithfulness.

Mordecai - "Perhaps"

This sermon comes from Esther 4:9-17 and tells the story of Mordecai and Esther, two Jews who lived during the Persian Empire in the city of Susa.  This sermon takes a look at the important ideas of initiative, courage, and free will.

Nehemiah - A Plague of Forgetfulness

This sermon looks at the restoration of Judah and Jerusalem that Nehemiah and Ezra undertook under the sponsorship of Persia.  The sermon especially looks at forgetfulness and the role that it played in the destruction of Jerusalem.

Tamar - The Spread of Evil

This sermon looks at the role of influence in our lives by examining how sin spread from David's life to his whole family.  The text of the sermon is 1 Samuel 13:1-22 which is about the rape of Tamar by Amnon, half-brother and half-sister, both children of David.
