What does discipleship look like?

This is the last sermon in a series on discipleship, and in it we look at Paul's assertion that Jesus surmounts everything else in the world in importance.  Jesus said that there is a certain burden associated with following him, but it is light in comparison to every other path we might take.

Jesus Is Calling YOU

This sermon begins with the telling of the story of Scheherazade and her conversion to Christianity.  Dietrich Bonhoeffer went to a firing squad in Hitler's prisons because of his commitment to following Jesus alone.  The sermon looks at what Jesus expects of his followers.

Dumbing-Down Discipleship

This sermon looks at the tendency human beings have of lowering the expectations we have for what it means to be a disciple of Jesus.  Clearly, Jesus intends for us to give our whole selves to the role of being his followers.

Running as a Metaphor for Discipleship

This sermon comes from Matthew 25:14-30 and looks at the Parable of the Talents.  This parable sits within a larger section of Matthew and comprises a body of teaching from Jesus about the importance of preparation.

Parables About Lost Things

This sermon comes from Luke 15:1-7 and takes a look at the parables of the lost coin, lost sheep, and lost son.  These parables are Jesus' own characterization of the kind of care that he has for the lost and disenfranchised as compared to religious authorities who care more about their own power and privilege.

This sermon is taken from Luke 10:25-37 and is the story of the Good Samaritan.  The principle question of this parable is "who is my neighbor" and how should I treat him/her. This is the second in a 4-part series on the Parables of Jesus.

Divine Reveresals

This sermon comes from Jesus' story about the Rich Man and Lazarus.  The sermon looks at the way that gates and doors often function to change or reverse our lives, as in the case of the Rich Man who passed through his gate to his rich lifestyle while ignoring poor Lazarus at his gate.  The man found to his dismay that the life of privilege actually was a portal into a life of suffering, while poor Lazarus went from suffering to life.
