This sermon is about Sloth, the fourth deadly sin in our series on the Seven Deadly Sins.  Also called Acedia (əˈsē-dēə) sloth is apathy and laziness that makes one cease caring about matters of importance.  Sloth is insidious and destructive, and it is easy to see why it was called a Deadly Sin.

Envy is the second deadly sin in this series.  Our text comes from 1 Samuel 18:5-16 where we learn about the envy that Saul had for David.  Envy occurs because a distortion of pride, and it is characterized by its absolutely unloving nature.

Proud of Being Proud

Dante Alighieri, the creator of the "Divine Comedy," said that pride is the common element or theme of all the sins found in the Inferno (hell).  And Pope Gregory (540-605) said that "pride is the greatest sin of all."  

In today's sermon, we will explore the sin of pride, it's description, and how to avoid committing sins of pride.
