What do you care about?

The text for this sermon comes from Amos 6:1-7.  In this text Amos condemn the people of Judah because of their greed and self-centeredness leading to the mistreatment of people who were poor, sick, or disenfranchised.  The sermon looks at how the sins of our current age are similar to those of ancient Judah and also at what a new way of living would look.

It’s Mine, Mine, Mine

The text for this sermon comes from James 5:1-6.  The sermon is about the Deadly Sin of Greed.  Greed answers the question, "How much is enough for me?"  In the West, greed is rampant, and there is never enough, witnessed by the proliferation of personal storage facilities.  The sermon also enumerates some of the destructive results of greed.

First Things First

This sermon is a mashup of Deuteronomy 26:1-11 and Luke 11:24-26.  It has the theme of putting things in the right order in our lives.  Jesus told a parable of a man that swept his house clean, driving out a single demon.  But the man did not fill his now clean house with good things so the demon returned with 7 more demons more wicked than he was.

Similarly, Moses told the Israelites to make sure that they put God first in ordering their lives else they would fall away from him and forgetting how they got their prosperity.
It's the same message.  Put first things first or suffer terrible consequences.

This sermon takes a look at the subject of gratitude.  In light of the fact that Thanksgiving Day is less than one week away, it is good to remember the importance of being thankful and what a thankless society looks like.

Divine Reveresals

This sermon comes from Jesus' story about the Rich Man and Lazarus.  The sermon looks at the way that gates and doors often function to change or reverse our lives, as in the case of the Rich Man who passed through his gate to his rich lifestyle while ignoring poor Lazarus at his gate.  The man found to his dismay that the life of privilege actually was a portal into a life of suffering, while poor Lazarus went from suffering to life.

Faux Thriftiness

This sermon comes from Matthew 26:6-13, the occasion of the woman anointing Jesus with expensive ointment.  The text contrasts the wasteful generosity of the woman over against the penury and greed of Judas.

We want to sit at the head table.

This sermon takes its text from Matthew 20:20-28 where the mother of James and John asked Jesus for her two sons to sit at his right and left hand in his kingdom.  She was in effect asking for her sons to have the two most powerful positions of authority aside from the King's.  This sermon is about how we often miss the point and get snared by petty pursuits.
