Preaching Peace

Posted in gospel, Christ by LifeSpringChurch on January 13th, 2020

Acts 10:34-43 is the text for this sermon.  In this text, Luke tells the story of Peter's encounter with Cornelius, a Roman centurion and a Gentile.  The opening of the gospel to Gentiles was a huge change for the formerly Jewish church in Jerusalem.  The sermon talks about the implications of this.

Good News for the Poor

Posted in gospel, good news by LifeSpringChurch on January 28th, 2019

Good news is not "good" to everyone.  This sermon looks at the ways that what Jesus considered good news can be offensive news to the rich, powerful, and privileged.  The text comes from Luke 4:14-21.

What to do NOW

Third in a series about the Good News, this sermon takes a longer look at what the Bible says about God's work to redeem and reunify the Creation.   The text comes from Philippians 3:12-21 which concludes, "He will take our weak mortal bodies and change them into glorious bodies....using the same power with which he will bring everything under his control."

Inadequate God

Posted in gospel, good news by LifeSpringChurch on September 17th, 2018

This sermon comes from Romans 8:38-39 which, in Good News fashion, speaks about the love of God which is more powerful than the forces of Hell or any other evil force.  Compare this to those views of God and his love which are inaequate, such as the vengeful God or the meek and mild God, and therefore not good news to those to whom we speak of God.  The sermon challenges us to think of God as the one who sent his son, defeated sin and death, and is now finishing his work of redemption.

What’s Good News

Posted in gospel by LifeSpringChurch on September 9th, 2018

This sermon takes its text from 1 Corinthians 2:7-9 and 15:3-8.  The key idea of the sermon is that sometimes what we call the Good News is not.  The sermon opens a series which examines what the Good News is and how we present it to our friends.

This sermon comes from Joshua's final speech to Israel (Joshua 24:2, 14-15)l in which he calls for them to make a decision about whom they will worship in the future - the gods of their ancestors or The God of Israel.  The sermon examines the way in which our faith become polluted by other ideas which we indiscriminately add to our belief system.

I have seen your salvation.

Paul wrote the little, twenty-five verse of Philemon to a slave-owner.  Paul was sending escaped slave, Onesimus, back to his owner, and Paul wrote to persuade Philemon to receive Onesimus back as a newly converted brother in Christ.  The letter is an excellent look at Christian accountability, conversion, and generosity.c

The book of Colossians was written to a church that had been infected by false teaching.  Paul told this church that he prayed constantly for them to the effect that they would grow in maturity and wisdom with respect to God's will for them.  This sermon examines the dangers of false teaching and the way to be protected against it.

Go West Young Man

Posted in , church, missional, gospel by LifeSpringChurch on September 18th, 2016

This sermon takes its title from a Horace Greely quote during the westward migration in the infancy of the United States. The sermon text comes from Acts 13:1-5 in which the church in Syrian Antioch commissioned Paul and Barnabas to begin a westward push of the gospel to central Turkey and parts west of there.  This sermon looks at the four characteristics of the first century church and shows how LifeSpring can imitate them as well:  trusting God, being sensitive to God's call, focus on mission, and unification in purpose.
