Putting Herod Back Into Christmas
Sunday Dec 29, 2019
Sunday Dec 29, 2019
The text for this sermon comes from Matthew 2:13-23. It concerns the themes seen in the Old Testament (type) and the way they are reinterpreted in the New Testament (anti-type). For example, manna which sustained Israel in the wilderness (type) and Jesus the bread of life in the New Testament (anti-type). The sermon invited listeners to 1) have a clear vision of what God is doing today, 2) not settle for a counterfeit narrative such as what our government gives us, and 3) listening to God rather than to false voices.

Isaiah 11:1-10 is about God's work which continues. Isaiah described the state of Judah, at the time of his writing as being like the stump of a tree that has been cut down. Nevertheless, a shoot is growing from the stump - Jesus. And the shoot continues to grow. Such knowledge changes the way we look at current events and the future.
